Instead, he gets the Hightower murder. Mock immediately faces intense political pressure to make a quick arrest and restore calm in the troubled city.

Some believe Hightower was killed by the Ku Klux Klan because of his civil rights work. But Mock thinks Rufus is covering for someone in the minister's most intimate inner circle. His search for answers takes him to Hightower's small hometown in rural Georgia. There, he joins forces with Sheriff Ed Meaney, who has his own agenda, and Mama Kalie, an ageless, mysterious psychic who had predicted Hightower's murder decades earlier.

They try to figure out who among those closest to Reverend Hightower wanted him dead

His beautiful widow, Liz, who seems all-too-eager for a new romance and who has Mock off balance from the jump?

His other son, Corey, a charismatic playboy preacher with an eye for the ladies and a dark side?

Corey's neglected wife, the lovely and high-strung Laura, who was sneaking around with Reverend Hightower in the weeks before his murder?

Sam Chase, the local businessman who harbored a deep-seated hatred of Jimmy Lee Hightower?

As Mock races against the clock to find a murderer, he uncovers a viper's nest of long-buried secrets that someone will kill and kill again to keep buried. The flawed detective will find himself challenged like never before en route to a face-to-face rendezvous with a killer unlike any he has ever known.

Nathan McCall, author of the classic memoir "Makes Me Wanna Holler" and "Them A Novel," says of the debut novel "This is exquisite storytelling, a real page-turner, spun in the Southern literary tradition of the great Ernest Gaines. With 'The Moaning Bench,' Larry Copeland has announced himself as a fresh new voice on the fiction scene."

The Moaning Bench edition by Larry Copeland Literature Fiction eBooks

This is a well written and developed story that relives significant events of the 70's and 80's while weaving a story that will remind you of how life in rural towns of the south was REALLY like. It does well in its description of the negro and white hatred surrounding segregation and the struggle both races had to endure. Add a little murder some sex and you have an awesome book to read. Hats off to one of our newest writers of the 21st century.

The Moaning Bench edition by Larry Copeland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

The Moaning Bench was a great read! Larry Copeland surely has the creative talent needed to keep the reader captivated! I'm sure I will read it again to see if I missed anything the first time. I can't wait until The Bella Chronicles is released!
I was intrigued from the first to last page. I could visualize the characters and most definitely the locations . This would make a great movie. I look forward to Larry's next book .
I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down! I delighted in following Detective Mock through 1980 Atlanta. The historical context of the Atlanta child murders and the fear that gripped the city was a well used back drop for the story as well as the political/societal tones of the time. Racial tension was felt in this story without it having to be blatantly offered up to the reader. It was suspenseful, well thought out, beautifully written and I can't wait for Mr. Copeland's next story!
Larry Copeland has penned a real page turner. A story of family and redemption told through the backdrop of Atlanta's Missing and Murdered Children. This is Southern storytelling at it's best. Thought provoking and full of secrets and lies, as well as characters you can love and hate. I can't wait for Copeland's next book.
Copeland's tale of murder and family destruction is at times compelling and interesting. The lack of editing and expansion of dialogue as well as its uneven use of flashbacks pulls the reader out of the story more often than not. There are also moments that are lost or hard to follow because actions are not explained clearly enough. It breaks my heart because I liked Cleveland Mock and his world. He deserves a story that was given more attention. I hope Mama Kalie's girl, Bella gets a better chance.
Larry Copeland is a great writer who included great details in this beautifully written piece of literary gold. I had problems putting it down. I must read it again because I can't seem to stop thinking about it since I finish reading it. It reminds me of times in West Central Georgia when I was growing up. Race relations was not the best, and some situations were, at times, very tense. I am still remembering many details that I remember reading but am just now realizing why they were important. Looking forward to reading more work from this great writer.
The Moaning Bench

For those searching for their next fictional escape, look no further. Dove-tailing into the Atlanta’s Murdered and Missing Children case of 1980, author Larry Copeland creates an environment and cast of characters that draws in the reader.

The damaged-but-likeable main character, Cleveland Mock, exhibits pit-bull-like tenacity – that double-edged sword wielded by many homicide detectives – in his pursuit of the truth. Beyond that, I’ll offer no hints at spoilers.

Reading this distinctly Georgian tale is worth every nanosecond spent.
